Mahindra has begun real-world testing of its upcoming compact SUV, Vision S, signalling the next phase of its aggressive product expansion. The model is underpinned by Mahindra’s all-new NU IQ modular platform, designed to support multiple powertrain options. First previewed as a concept alongside Vision T, Vision X, and Vision SXT in August, the Vision S is now seen testing on Indian roads, hinting at its production-ready form. Once launched, it will go head-to-head with Tata Motors’ recently introduced Sierra, intensifying competition in the compact SUV space.
Latest spy images capture the Vision S in full camouflage, revealing a distinctly upright and rugged stance. The SUV carries a squared-off profile with a flat bonnet and strong shoulder lines. Up front, round headlamps combined with a vertical-slat grille give it a tough, old-school SUV character, while the LED daytime running lights appear inspired by the Thar Roxx. A sensor visible in the lower grille area suggests the inclusion of ADAS features, pointing to a tech-forward approach despite its boxy design. Other visible elements include rectangular fog lamps, chunky alloy wheels, and a suspension setup that hints at serious ground clearance.
Ground clearance is expected to be one of the Vision S’s key strengths. The test vehicle rides on large wheels with thick tyres and appears to use a long-travel suspension tuned for rough roads. Reports indicate that Mahindra may offer a 5-link independent rear suspension, a setup aimed at improving ride quality, handling stability, and off-road capability, making it suitable for both urban use and adventurous driving.
From the side and rear, the Vision S continues its rugged theme. Large glass areas contribute to a commanding driving position, while the rear design features vertically oriented tail lamps and a flat tailgate. A spare wheel mounted on the tailgate further underlines the SUV’s utilitarian character. The rear bumper design remains simple and functional, reinforcing the Vision S’s no-nonsense SUV identity.
Interior spy shots suggest that Mahindra is positioning the Vision S as a feature-rich offering. The cabin is expected to get a panoramic sunroof and a modern dashboard layout dominated by two 12.3-inch digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment. Physical controls for key functions remain, paired with distinctive AC vent styling and a new dual-tone, three-spoke steering wheel. Feature highlights are likely to include terrain modes, hill descent control, traction control, differential lock, and off-road driving aids. Higher variants could offer dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and premium soft-touch materials. Interestingly, a flat-floor layout is also expected, which should improve rear-seat comfort and cabin space.
While Mahindra has not officially confirmed engine options, the Vision S is expected to launch initially with internal combustion engines. Likely choices include a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. Given the flexibility of the NU IQ platform, hybrid and electric versions could follow later, allowing Mahindra to expand the Vision S lineup in line with future emission norms and market trends.
With testing now underway, the Mahindra Vision S is shaping up to be a strong alternative to the Tata Sierra, combining rugged styling, modern technology, and multi-energy readiness for the evolving Indian SUV market.
