Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce its first all-electric SUV, the Maruti eVitara, in India on 2nd December. The model is already on sale in global markets like Japan and the UK and is being manufactured locally at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. India will also serve as a major export hub for this EV, with shipments planned for more than 100 countries.
The Indian version of the eVitara is expected to carry the same battery options as the international model, featuring 49 kWh and 61 kWh packs. Both versions will initially be offered with front-wheel-drive (FWD). The all-wheel-drive (AWD) AllGrip-e variant with dual motors is expected to be introduced later.
The 49 kWh FWD version produces 144 hp, while the 61 kWh FWD delivers 174 hp. The 61 kWh AWD variant generates 184 hp. In terms of driving range, the 61 kWh FWD variant offers up to 428 km (WLTP), the 49 kWh FWD variant delivers 344 km, and the AWD version covers around 394 km on a full charge.
Performance figures from international markets show the 61 kWh FWD variant reaching 0–100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, while the AWD variant completes the same sprint in 7.4 seconds.
The eVitara is expected to come loaded with premium features to strengthen its position in the competitive EV SUV segment. Highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, a Harman audio system, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging and a 10-way powered driver seat. The cabin features a dual-screen setup with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment unit, along with semi-leather seats and keyless entry.
Safety equipment is expected to be robust, supported by the model’s 4-star Euro NCAP rating. Features include seven airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring and a suite of ADAS functions.
The eVitara has been designed keeping family usage in mind. The cabin is spacious and the rear seats offer sliding and reclining functions. Depending on configuration, the boot space ranges from 238 litres to 306 litres. The India-spec version is likely to offer better practicality thanks to revised under-floor storage.
Maruti is likely to price the eVitara aggressively, with the base 49 kWh variant expected to start around ₹20 lakh. The 61 kWh FWD version may be priced closer to ₹25 lakh.
Once launched, the eVitara will compete with the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE.6, MG ZS EV and the upcoming Tata Sierra EV.
