Kia India is preparing to enter the premium three-row SUV segment with the new Kia Sorento, which is scheduled to make its official India debut on September 4, 2026. The company has already revealed the India-spec SUV and commenced production at its Anantapur manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh.
The Sorento will become Kia India’s new flagship ICE SUV and, importantly, will be the company’s first strong-hybrid SUV in India. Kia has also confirmed that the India-spec hybrid will be available with all-wheel drive (AWD).
The Kia Sorento will officially launch in India on September 4, 2026. Kia has already opened bookings, while production of the India-spec model has begun at its Anantapur plant.
Kia has positioned the Sorento above the Seltos and Carens in its Indian portfolio, making it the brand’s flagship SUV in the country.
The India-spec Sorento retains the globally recognised design of the fourth-generation model. It gets a large, upright front fascia with Kia’s signature Tiger Nose grille, vertically positioned LED headlamps and distinctive L-shaped LED daytime-running lights.
The SUV has a long bonnet, squared-off wheel arches, prominent roof rails and a relatively upright body, giving it a substantial road presence. At the rear, the vertically oriented LED tail-lamps, roof spoiler and sculpted tailgate give it a more premium appearance.
The official India-spec images confirm that Kia has retained the overall global design rather than developing a heavily India-specific exterior.
The global Sorento measures:
| Dimension | Kia Sorento |
|---|---|
| Length | 4,815 mm |
| Width | 1,900 mm |
| Height | Approx. 1,700 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,815 mm |
These are the global-model dimensions; Kia has not yet published the complete India-specific dimensional specification. Therefore, the figures should not be treated as officially confirmed India-spec numbers until Kia releases the final technical sheet.
With a length of more than 4.8 metres, the Sorento will be considerably larger than compact three-row SUVs and will sit in the premium SUV space alongside vehicles such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Majestor, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron.
The Sorento is a three-row SUV and is expected to be offered in six- and seven-seat configurations in India.
The six-seat version is expected to use captain seats in the second row, while the seven-seat version should feature a conventional second-row bench. However, Kia has not yet published the final India-spec variant-wise seating configuration.
Inside, the Sorento gets a modern, premium cabin with a technology-focused dashboard.
The global model features a curved display arrangement incorporating two 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The India-spec model is also expected to retain this layout.
Other features either confirmed through the India-spec reveal or indicated by official images and the global model include:
Kia’s final variant-wise equipment list will be important at the time of launch.
One of the most interesting additions for the Indian Sorento is Kia AI Assistant powered by Live Generative AI.
Kia has confirmed that the India-spec Sorento will be the first Kia globally to introduce this Live Generative AI technology. The system is designed to allow occupants to interact with the vehicle using more natural, conversational commands rather than relying only on conventional fixed voice commands.
This could allow occupants to ask questions, access information and control supported vehicle functions through conversational interaction.
The biggest talking point of the Sorento will be its strong-hybrid powertrain.
Kia has confirmed that the Indian SUV will be available with a strong-hybrid petrol powertrain, making the Sorento Kia India’s first hybrid SUV.
The global Sorento uses a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system. International specifications quote around 238 hp and 380 Nm of combined output, although Kia has not yet officially announced the exact India-spec output figures.
The India-spec hybrid will also get AWD, which is an important confirmation because it combines hybrid efficiency with all-wheel-drive capability.
The exact India-spec fuel-efficiency figure has not yet been announced, so any specific km/l number circulating online should currently be treated as an estimate rather than an official figure.
Kia will also offer the Sorento with a 2.2-litre diesel engine.
The same engine family is used internationally in the Sorento, while the 2.2-litre diesel is also familiar to Indian buyers from the Kia Carnival.
The international-specification Sorento diesel produces around 202 hp and 441 Nm, but Kia has not yet confirmed the final India-spec power and torque figures.
The Indian diesel is expected to be paired with an automatic transmission, but the exact India-spec transmission specification should be considered unconfirmed until Kia announces it officially.
Kia has officially confirmed that the Sorento hybrid will get AWD in India.
This is one of the SUV’s biggest differentiators because buyers will get the combination of a strong-hybrid powertrain, three-row practicality and all-wheel drive.
Kia has not yet confirmed whether the Indian diesel version will also receive AWD. Therefore, claims that both Indian versions will definitely get AWD should be avoided until the company releases the final specifications.
Safety is expected to be another major strength of the Sorento.
The India-spec model is expected to feature Level 2 ADAS, along with equipment such as:
Kia has not yet published the complete India-spec ADAS feature-by-feature list or confirmed the exact number of airbags. Therefore, it would be incorrect to state a specific airbag count as confirmed at this stage.
The global Sorento offers approximately 179 litres of luggage space with all three rows in use, with substantially more room available when the rear rows are folded.
International figures quote up to around 1,996 litres with the rear seats folded, although the final India-spec boot capacity has not yet been officially announced by Kia.
Kia has not announced the Sorento’s official price yet. Pricing will be revealed at the September 4 launch.
There is currently a significant difference between media estimates. Some reports expect the SUV to start around ₹30-35 lakh ex-showroom, while others expect a starting price closer to ₹40 lakh depending on localisation and equipment.
Because Kia is manufacturing the Sorento in India, the final price will be closely watched. For now, ₹30-40 lakh ex-showroom can be considered a broad market expectation rather than confirmed pricing.
The upcoming Sorento will compete in India’s premium three-row SUV market. Its potential rivals include:
Its strongest USP could be the combination of three-row seating, strong hybrid powertrain and AWD, something that could make it particularly attractive to buyers looking for a premium family SUV.
Confirmed by Kia:
Not officially confirmed yet:
This distinction is important because several specifications currently circulating online are based on the global Sorento, rather than Kia India’s final technical specification sheet.
The Kia Sorento is shaping up to be one of Kia India’s most important launches of 2026. It brings the brand into a considerably more premium SUV category while offering something unusual for the Indian market: a three-row strong-hybrid SUV with AWD.
The combination of a premium cabin, Level 2 ADAS, advanced connected technology, Kia’s new Live Generative AI assistant, a diesel option and local production could make the Sorento a serious alternative to established SUVs such as the Fortuner and newer premium rivals.
The biggest unanswered questions are now the price, India-spec engine outputs, fuel efficiency, transmission details and variant-wise equipment. Those details should be officially revealed when Kia launches the Sorento on September 4, 2026.
