Mumbai: Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ latest SUV, the Tata Sierra, has set a new national benchmark by entering the India Book of Records for achieving the maximum fuel efficiency in 12 hours. In a certified mileage test conducted at NATRAX, Indore, the new Sierra delivered an extraordinary 29.9 kmpl, surpassing the previous national fuel economy record.
The test was carried out on November 30, 2025, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM by the Pixel Motion team, who drove the 1.5L Hyperion-powered Sierra continuously with only short stops for driver changes. The record was officially verified the same day, showcasing the SUV’s impressive real-world efficiency potential.
At the core of this achievement is Tata Motors’ all-new 1.5L Hyperion petrol engine. Developed for high thermal efficiency and strong low-end torque, the engine uses a refined combustion system and friction-optimised architecture to ensure consistent, stable performance throughout long-duration runs. The Hyperion platform aims to balance efficiency, refinement and performance for the next generation of Tata petrol vehicles.
Mr. Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, expressed pride in the milestone, stating that achieving a national efficiency record so early in the Sierra’s market journey highlights the engineering strength behind the Hyperion powertrain. He added that this record reinforces the Sierra’s value for customers while demonstrating Tata Motors’ commitment to advanced, efficient and future-ready technologies.
In addition to setting the fuel efficiency record, the Tata Sierra also achieved a top speed of 222 km/h at NATRAX in a separate validated test. This underscores the performance capabilities of the Hyperion engine under controlled evaluation conditions.
Important safety note
Tata Motors clarified that all tests were performed by trained professionals in a controlled environment. The company advises customers not to attempt similar driving behaviour and to always follow speed limits and traffic regulations. Vehicles delivered to customers will be electronically limited to a top speed of 190 km/h in line with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ safety standards.
