Hyundai Motor Group has announced a major strategic partnership to accelerate the development of Hong Kong’s hydrogen economy, marking a significant step in its Asia-Pacific hydrogen expansion plans.

The announcement was made during the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026 held in Hong Kong from May 18-20, where Hyundai Motor Group signed a multi-party Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading companies from Korea, Hong Kong, mainland China, and France. The initiative aims to establish a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong, covering hydrogen production, refueling infrastructure, and deployment of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

The project will leverage Hyundai’s Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) technology, already being implemented in markets such as Korea and Indonesia. Through this model, low-carbon hydrogen will be produced using landfill gas resources in Hong Kong, helping the city move closer to its Climate Action Plan 2050 goal of carbon neutrality.

The agreement was signed by representatives from several major organizations, including The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Veolia Hong Kong Holding Ltd., China Inspection Company Limited, and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co. Ltd. among others.

According to Hyundai Motor Group, the partnership will initially focus on three key areas:

  • Production of low-carbon hydrogen using landfill gas
  • Development of hydrogen refueling stations across high-traffic locations
  • Introduction of hydrogen-powered buses, including airport shuttle and tourism buses

Hyundai’s hydrogen business platform, HTWO, will play a central role in the project. The company also showcased its hydrogen technologies and fuel-cell systems at the symposium, including products manufactured at HTWO Guangzhou, Hyundai’s first overseas hydrogen fuel-cell production facility.

Speaking at the event, Seung Kyu Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Energy & Hydrogen Policy Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Group, stated that the company sees Hong Kong as a strategic gateway for expanding hydrogen business operations across the Asia-Pacific region.

The project is expected to move into the execution phase soon, with the site for the hydrogen production facility likely to be finalized by 2027. Hyundai and its partners aim to establish a fully operational and self-sustaining hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong by the end of 2030.

The development further strengthens Hyundai Motor Group’s global hydrogen ambitions as the company continues investing in clean-energy infrastructure and hydrogen mobility solutions worldwide.
